      At BASEBALL GAMES, our main focus is on collecting and researching 
      tabletop baseball games produced since the 1860s -- 19th- and 20th-century 
      board games, card games, tabletop action games, mechanical and electrical 
      games, dart games, pinball and bagatelle games -- the older the better.  
            That doesn't entirely preclude any and all interest in cybergaming.  
      As a service to members of the BASEBALL GAMES group, here's a list of 
      free on-line baseball games, free baseball game downloads and trial versions, 
      and free-participation on-line leagues available on the ol' Interweb as of 
      summer 2009.  Some are games you can play right at your computer, some 
      are downloads of rules and charts for boardgames;  some are deeply detailed 
      MLB sims, some are simple home-run-derby games for kids (or relaxing 
      time-killers for grown-ups, if you prefer);  some feature extravagant lifelike 
      graphics, some are early text-only experiments in computer baseball.  
            Give 'em a try, and if you find one or more on-line that we haven't 
      listed, or any that have disappeared into the electronic ether -- or if you're 
      moved to write a review of any of them -- please post your news or analysis

      Jeff Downey's Tabletop-Sports.com is always the best starting point 
      for this sort of thing.  This page includes dozens of unique original 
      downloadable boardgames as well as revisions, adaptations, and add-ons 
      for many well-known tabletop baseball games both current and out-of-print.  
      It's also probably updated more often than the page you're currently viewing.  

      Game Downloads is another tremendous source for literally thousands 
      of games, in every possible genre, the software for which has now fallen 
      into the realm of "abandonware" -- meaning loads of PC and console games 
      you may have loved as a kid can now be yours again for free.  More than 
      thirty free baseball games for PC users are among their inventory, and 
      they're noted below with a double asterisk after their title.

      Okay, we as much as said that we strongly prefer our dice and cards and 
      spinners and charts to pixels on a glass screen when it comes to baseball. 
      We freely admit, however, that we have found a few computer games that 
      we thought were pretty cool, none of which have the slightest thing to do 
      with baseball whatsoever.  Naming them may reveal just what a bunch of 
      squares, luddites, and old fogeys we really are here in the front office, 
      but besides Myst (there's a master's thesis waiting to be written about 
      that game's influence on sci-fi/fantasy/horror cinema), here are a few 
      little on-line diversions we've enjoyed, all free to play:   

  Samorost 1 
      Sort of like a short version of Myst for Bohemian kids on weed.  Cute sound.  
  Crimson Room 
      This one can drive you up the wall, so to speak.  Vital hint: enter the code 
      correctly the first time -- if you mistype it or just guess wrong, you'll have to 
      start all over.  From the same diabolical designer:  the equally tricky White
      Chamber, the simpler Blue Chamber, and the creepier and more challenging 
      (and misspelled) Viridian Room.  You'll absolutely need sound for all of 'em.  
      More room-escapes here...    
  Ethan Haas Was Right 
      Very creepy puzzle game that was part of the promo for Cloverfield (the film -- 
      and now for Alpha Omega the Game) -- make sure you've got the lights off 
      and your speakers cranked up.   
  Flow 
      Patience, you diatoms -- learn to evolve!  Ultraviolence at the unicellular level, 
      yet weirdly hypnotic, tranquil as a Japanese moss garden.  Great mood music.
